Summer Clinic for Music and Dance 2009

Posted in Events, Music by Robert Henry

The Kennesaw State University/Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestras Summer Clinic for Music and Dance is a place where students can get a comprehensive experience. Students will study with artist teachers, perform in ensembles, attend professional performances, and learn how to be a complete musician or dancer. Participants will not only get training on improving their craft, but will also receive the tools to become life-long appreciators of the arts. The clinic will conclude with a chamber music concert and performance of the large ensembles displaying the activities and progress of the week.

Price: $289.00

A personal comment:  This is an amazing value for your child.  This is an experience you and your family will always remember.  There is nothing else like this in GA.

MTNA Convention in Atlanta, GA

Posted in Events, Music by Robert Henry

Robert making a brilliant point. Probably. Hopefully.

Robert making a brilliant point. Hopefully…

This year’s MTNA National Convention will be held in Atlanta, GA.

I’ll be presenting a Lecture/Discussion entitled: “Learning to Earning: FROM STUDENT TO PROFESSIONAL”, which will be held in the Roswell Room at the Westin Peachtree Plaza on this Saturday, March 28. We begin at 9:15 A.M.

Among the points I’ll be making is that we musicians need to elevate our own community from this funk in which we find ourselves, the self-pity, the self-deprecation. The so-called “Starving Artist” mentality has got to go. From performers to teachers, we are business-people, and we need to start acting like it.

And best wishes to those pianists participating in the National Piano Duo Competition! I see you have made it this far, which is very far indeed. I and my fellow judges are eager to experience your music-making on this Sunday.

Looking forward to meeting many of you.

Rach is Bach

Back by popular request is Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3 in D minor.  It’s a live recording from back in the day, but it’s still exciting.  Look for it in the Media Player.

(The “download MP3” feature on the Media Player is almost ready.  For now, you can listen on the playlist.)

Summer of ’81

A surprised, seven-year-old Robert Henry upon seeing his piano for the first time.

A surprised, seven-year-old Robert Henry upon seeing his
piano for the first time.

It had been two long weeks since I’d been home.  I was worn out from summer camp in the mountains of Toccoa, GA.  Rafting, hiking, swimming, baseball, generally goofing off – it was a seven year old boy’s dream.  But that’s not what I remember about the summer of 1981.

Her timing was perfect.  She waited patiently while I unpacked my backpack from the trip.  She watched me lazily sort my laundry and shake the pebbles from my shoes.  And she was silently ready with the camera.  My mother then took the best photograph a mother could possibly take.

I remember the moment when I first saw the piano, my brand new Everett upright piano.  It was pure joy.  All I could do was rush to the piano and begin to play.  The rest is history.

This holiday season, consider giving your child a piano.
